The purpose of this Report is to show two back-tested histories 'in parallel' from 8/16/02 to the present. The first 3 columns of the report show the Differential Signals ($NQ-RU, $NQ-SP, and $NQ-DW) after conversion to the standard signal format: +/+, -/-, +/-, and -/+. The second set of 3 columns shows the equivalent signal that would have been generated by simply following the Grail System signals for the pair of ETFs, i.e., QQQQ vs. IWM, QQQQ vs. SPY, and QQQQ vs. DIA. These two sets of columns are followed by a summary of the trade statistics that would have resulted from actually trading these signals; the percentage gain, maximum drawdown, trading accuracy, hedging percentage, and number of trades are shown for each individual column. The hedging percentage shows the percentage of signals that were 'hedged' by having a simultaneous Long and Short. The Grail Signal columns, naturally, have far fewer 'hedged' trades than do the Differential Signal columns.
The last signal entry is the 'current' signal for the next market day. All
entries above this are back-tested patterns. Trades are simulated by looking
at the signal pattern for a given market day and then acting upon it at the
next day's market Open. Valuations are always calculated based on the next
day's Open price for the equities. Also, since in each case two trade positions
are being maintained simultaneously, only the position that has actually changed
will be switched -- while the other one will be maintained (either Long or
Short). The number of trades shown in the statistics accounts for each separate
buy, sell, short, or cover.
This Report works as follows:
(1) Strong Differential Signals for NQ-RU, NQ-SP, and NQ-DW are interpreted
directly as a 'hedged' pair, that is, a Long (+) and a Short (-).
Thus the L/S:l/s signal maps into the hedging pair +/- (e.g., Long QQQQ
and Short IWM). Likewise, the S/L:s/l signal maps into the inverse
hedging pair -/+ (e.g., Short QQQQ and Long IWM).
(2) Weaker Differential Signals (L/S:?/? and S/L:?/?) are resolved by using
the current Grail System signal for the second component (IWM, SPY, DIA).
In other words, if we have L/S:?/? for $NQ-RU, then we look to see if
IWM is a BUY or a SELL within our Grail System signals (see SIGNALS.TXT
report). The L/S:?/? signal would then be converted to a +/+ if IWM was
a BUY, or a +/- if IWM was a SELL.
So, L/S:?/? goes to +/+ (IWM = BUY) or +/- (IWM = SELL)
and, S/L:?/? goes to -/+ (IWM = BUY) or -/- (IWM = SELL)
*** Notice that half of these cases are 'hedged' (a simultaneous Long and Short), while the other half are 100% Long or 100% Short.
(3) In cases where an 'unhedged' situation occurs (+/+ or -/-) the signals are forced to agree with the Grail System values and the signal is marked with a '!'
(4) A separator line is emitted whenever ANY of the 3 expanded signals changes on a line. These separator lines are generated independently for changes in the first 3 columns (Differential Signals) and the last 3 columns (Grail System signals).
Differential Signal Columns
---------------------------
The overall objective of this Report is to give precedence to the Differential
Signal when it appears to offer a convincing 'hedged' trade (e.g.,
L/S:l/s => +/-), and to maintain this for the 1st component (QQQQ) as the signal
becomes weaker (e.g., L/S:?/? => +/?') -- but in this weaker case, rather
than providing no information about the second equity pair at all, we instead
utilize our Grail System signal to complete the second pair ... even if a non-hedged situation results.
The advantage of this approach is that often the 'hedged' pattern can be extended past some of the weaker periods WHEN the second equity (IWM, SPY, DIA) is in a SELL state, and in any case it suggests when situations may occur when ALL capital should be thrown to the Long side (or possibly, the 'short' side).
It is immediately obvious that the use of the Grail System signals results in far better performance than that resulting from use of the Differential Signals, but at the price of substantially greater drawdowns. Also, about two-thirds of the Differential Signal trades are hedged by a Long and a compensatory Short. This is why the drawdowns are lower ... and also why the total percentage gain is lower as well.

DIFFHIST.CSV: A Comma Separated Value file that can be loaded directly into a spreadsheet program (e.g., Excel), and which contains the date and signal columns. Please
let us know if you would like the signal formats changed to make analysis easier. For example, the signal '+/-' can be split into two columns like 'B' and 'S', etc.
In the CSV file a column title like 'D:$NQ-RU' represents, for example, the (D)ifferential Signal for $NQ-RU (QQQQ vs. IWM, while the title 'G:$NQ-RU' represents the
