This daily report is a key component of our Strategist System, and is especially useful for short-term traders who wish to optimize their daily profits by making judicious intra-day trades. This Report consists of seven individual Tables. Table I-A focuses on the idea of a Market Open Signature (MOS), which is a parenthesized triplet of plus and minus signs ... indicating whether or not QQQQ, SMH, and SPY opened up, or down. respectively. A careful study of the overall profit probabilities shown for each of the 8 possible patterns, plus the detailed breakdowns into the 8 possible outcomes (MCS patterns), can be very helpful in determining an overall strategy for the day: whether to enter the market at all, whether to go Long or Short, and whether or not to cash out before the end of the day. Table I-B utilizes the Market Close Signature (MCS), which describes how QQQQ, SMH, and SPY closed (compared to the previous day's Close), in order to try to predict whether QQQQ, SMH, and SPY are likely to open 'up' or 'down' at the next Open. In other words, this Table is a guide to help decide whether it is better to hold a position overnight -- or to close it out either just prior to the market Close (once the MCS pattern becomes evident), or during the after-market hours. Table II is devoted exclusively to QQQQ. The information presented in this table is new, and is still undergoing rapid development. A full explanation of the technique behind the analysis summarized in this Table will be fully covered in an upcoming Tech Note entitled "Japanese Candlesticks and RaDiSH Numbers". The novel idea here is to use all available price and volume information for QQQQ, including the OPEN price, to try to estimate the HEIGHT (H) of the candlestick pattern that is most probable. HEIGHT(H) is defined as the average of the High(h) and Low(l) price for the day: (h+l)/2. If we can deduce "part" of the most likely candlestick pattern, then, coupled with a knowledge of the Open price we can calculate a probability that the candlestick will be profitable (Close price higher than the Open price). Table II-A is an additional table devoted to QQQQ. It uses an alternative method for estimating the relative success that QQQQ Longs or Shorts might have during the next trading day. Like Table II, Table II-A is still highly experimental. Table III-A is an additional table devoted to SMH. It uses an alternative method for estimating the relative success that SMH Longs or Shorts might have during the next trading day. Like Table II, Table III-A is still highly experimental. Table IV-A is an additional table devoted to SPY. It uses an alternative method for estimating the relative success that SPY Longs or Shorts might have during the next trading day. Like Table II, Table IV-A is still highly experimental. Table V-A is an additional table devoted to DIA. It uses an alternative method for estimating the relative success that DIA Longs or Shorts might have during the next trading day. Like Table II, Table V-A is still highly experimental. We will eventually be adding Tables III, IV, and V to extend our Long vs. Shorting predictions to SMH, SPY and DIA, just as Table II provides this information for QQQQ. ******************************************************************************** TABLE I-A: "MOS >> Close" PREDICTION TABLE ******************************************************************************** P R E D I C T I O N T A B L E (for the current MTI value and for Market Open Signature (MOS) and Market close Signature (MCS) Combinations) ========================================================== Probabilities of making a 1-day Profit on buying QQQQ, SMH, and SPY "Long" -- as a function of the MTI (Market Timing Indicator), and of whether the ETFs opened "up" or "down": (Market Open Signature "triple") ========================================================== Almost all of our Strategist(TM) reports are based exclusively on the market Close data. However, the performance of several key ETFs at the next day's market open can provide valuable clues as to how the day "might" progress. The information in this table was based on examining market data since 8/16/02 -- and using our historical MTI values. The objective of this Table is to show the "probable" profitability of buying QQQQ, SMH, or SPY "long" on any day as a function of two factors: (1) The MTI (Market Timing Indicator) on the previous day, and (2) whether QQQQ, SMH, or SPY had opened "up" (+) or "down" (-) since the previous day's close. It can be easily seen, as a general rule, that the probability of making a profit is GREATER if the ETFs opened "down" -- rather then "up". In other words, the MOS (Market Open Signature) pattern (+-+) signifies that QQQQ had opened "higher" than the previous day's close, SMH had opened "lower" than the previous days close, and, finally, that SPY had opened "higher" than the previous day's close. We will employ the term "Market Open Signature" to designate this "triple" of signs. Similarly, we can use the term MCS (Market CLOSE Signature) for the pattern which describes how our 3 ETFs "closed", compared to the previous day's close. In other words, a MOS of (+++) and a MCS of (+++) means that our 3 ETFs opened higher than the previous day's close, and also closed higher than the previous day's close -- although they may have still dipped precipitately during the course of the day and closed considerably below their open price. Two separate percentages are shown for each ETF. The first percentage (CL>OP%) is the probability that the ETF will "close" higher than its "open" price. This probability tends to be lower if the ETF opened "up", and higher if the ETF opened "down". The second percentage (CL>CL%) is the probability that the ETF will "close" higher than the previous day's "close" price. The difference between these two percentages may suggest a strategy in which an ETF is sold (or shorted) at the Open, and then repurchased later in the day. Our table shows the probabilities based on the CURRENT MTI (Market Timing Indicator) value, and is broken down into 8 sections depending on the specific MOS (Market Open Signature) which occurs at the market open. As mentioned previously, the CL>OP% and CL>CL% values are the probabilities that the ETF will close higher than the open, and will close higher than the previous day's close, respectively. In addition, however, there are 8 subtables based on the MCS (Market Close Signature) pattern which evolves during the trading day. Of course, we never know the MCS pattern until the actual "close", but it is usually possible to "guesstimate" its ultimate value by mid-afternoon. The MOS plus the MCS gives us 64 different combinations for the current MTI value; that is, we have 8 different Market Open Signatures, and each of those may yield 8 possible Market Close Signatures. In other words, every market day can be characterized by an ordered pair of numbers (o/c) which represents the Market Open Signature AND the Market Close Signature which results. For each MOS/MCS combination (64 in all) we show the "average" OPEN, HIGH, LOW, and CLOSE price for each ETF -- based on the previous day's close. In other words, in order to obtain actual average "prices", it is necessary to add the preceding day's Close price. The purpose of these subtables is to SUGGEST how the day might play out; we start with the MOS value (and its CL>OP% and CL>CL% probabilities), and keep an eye on the Change in QQQQ, SMH, and SPY in order to see which subtable we seem to be heading toward. The objective, of course, is to get an idea of how to set protective stops. We will be focusing much more this topic in the future. KEY: ==== MTI This is the CURRENT MTI value, and the cases shown represent the historical data for an MTI range from about 0.25 BELOW the MTI value shown ... to 0.25 ABOVE the MTI value shown. guidance as to whether it is better to retain QQQQ, SMH, or SPY overnight -- or to close the position just before the market Close (when the MCS pattern becomes evident) ... or in the after-market hours. This Table employs 4 pieces of information: (1) the historical values for the Market Timing Indicator (MTI), (2) historical prices for QQQQ, SMH, and SPY, (3) the Market Close Signature (MCS) for the current trading day (once it is known), and (4) whether the ETF closed higher than its Open (situation #1) -- or lower than its Open (situation #2). In this case, since QQQQ has made gains during the day, and its Close price will clearly be much greater than its Open price, then you would begin to watch the triplet (QQQQ,SMH,SPY) to see what the Market Close Signature is likely to end up as. When it is clear what the MCS is going to be, then you would look at the line for QQQQ, and for that particular MCS value, and you would read the OP%>CL% probability for the #1 column (since QQQQ has made gains during the day). If this proba- bility is substantially higher than 50%, then it makes sense to hang onto QQQQ overnight; otherwise, it is better to sell it near the Close ... betting that it will likely open lower the next day. Conversely, if you are holding QQQQ and it has lost value during the course of the day, then you might like to know if it will probably continue to drop during the after-market hours ... and into the next day. In this case, once you can see what the MCS value is going to be (are QQQQ/SMH/SPY 'up' or 'down'?) then you would look at the #2 column (since QQQQ has declined during the day) and see if the OP%>CL% is substantially greater than 50%. If it is, then it will likely be a good move to hang onto the ETF overnight in the hope that it will open higher. In the case of 'shorts' the same logic applies -- only now you will hope to see situations in which OP%>CL% is much less than 50% ... in other words, a slim chance that the equity will open higher the next morning. The theory is that in the case of very weak steering signals, the most likely outcome for the day is that QQQQ will move in the direction of its longer-term Grail System signal. *** New (9/1/06). The weak '?' signals have been split into '?+' and '?-' signals depending on whether the expected motion is up, or down, even if the magnitude of the move is apt to be very small. *** New (7/3/06). The 'BBBB' signal (our QQQQ Long/Short Signal) was extended to use a 4-character field. The signals are now: ?, *, **, ***, ****, S, SS, SSS and SSSS, where more asterisks suggest greater 'Long' accuracy, and more S's suggest greater 'Short' accuracy. QQQQ Profit Prediction Table (based on the Open price of QQQQ) ================================= This Table should be used as an adjunct to our QQQQ short-term buy/sell signal, the current MTI (Market Timing Indicator) value, and the overall profit prob- abilities based on an analysis of the Market Open Signature (MOS). The basic idea is as follows: ----------------------------- (1) We use the current MTI value, and recent price and volume information for QQQQ to estimate the "mid-point" of the range of QQQQ on the next trading day. The midpoint, which we denote as H for HEIGHT, is the estimated 'average' price for QQQQ, i.e., the average of the High(h) and Low(l) for the day: (h+l)/2. It turns out that we can estimate H (the HEIGHT) for QQQQ more accurately than we can the Close price. (2) Now, if we can estimate the value of H (the midpoint of the "wick" on the Candlestick pattern), then we would expect a low probability for profit if QQQQ opens at or above this H value. In this case there is very little that the price can do but fall. On the other hand, if QQQQ opens "below" the H value then we see an increased likelihood that the price of QQQQ will move upwards and give us a profitable close. (3) Finally, if we assume that our candlestick pattern for the day is "symmetrical", that is, with the body (Close-Open) of the candle centered on the wick (High-Low), then IF our estimate of H is reasonably correct we can guesstimate the percentage gain that "might" be achievable. Since we are stacking two very IFFY things on top of each other, however, our estimates must be viewed with great scepticism. (4) The first Three Steps (1-3) result in an estimated percentage gain in QQQQ for the day (GainA%) by estimating the value of H (HEIGHT) and then making some assumptions about candlestick patterns. It is also possible to try to calculate the likely percentage gain in QQQQ for the day "directly" from a neural network. We use a second neural network to estimate GainB%; the expected percentage gain in QQQQ from the Open to the Close. The Min.% and Max.% columns show the "normal" range in this value based on the observed error characteristics of the neural network. *** IMPORTANT NOTE: The technical approach used to construct this Table is still very new and unproven. We will begin to evaluate how accurate this method turns out to be in practice (aided by the MOS/MCS analysis of Table I), and will make improvements as necessary. The 'back-tested' accuracy figures are as follows: '*','S' Accuracy >= 70% '**','SS' Accuracy >= 75% '***','SSS' Accuracy >= 80% '****','SSSS' Accuracy >= 85% %-proj This is the 'projected' percentage gain/loss in QQQQ based on a neural network analysis of the MTI, NN1 (1-day QQQQ projection), the avg-GainA% value (below), and the avg-GainB% value (below). ---- Neural Network GainA ---- Min-H,Avg-H,Max-H: We have three sets of estimates for H, the estimated HEIGHT of QQQQ during the market day. H is the average of the High and the Low price during the day. In other words, in the terminology of Japanese Candlestick patterns, H is the midpoint of the "wick". Based on historical error measurements, Avg-H is the "best" (mean) measurement of H, Min-H represents the lowest value, and Max-H represents the highest. In other words, we "expect" that the best estimate for H during the day is Avg-H, but because of inherent errors, the value of H might drop as low as Min-H, or rise as high as Max-H. Of course, it is quite possible for the error on a specific day to exceed either of these lower and higher bounds; it is the "majority" of estimates that will lie between the Min-H and Max-H values. Min-GainA%,Avg-GainA%,Max-GainA% The estimated percentage gain that "might" be achieved if QQQQ is purchased at the Open price shown. However, this is a VERY hard thing to predict. First, we assume that we can estimate the value of H (HEIGHT) rather precisely (which we can't); Second, we have to assume that we will end up with a "symmetrical" candlestick pattern in which the body of the candle is centered on the wick. In other words, we assume that the protruding upper and lower wicks are identical in length. As in the case of the H figures, we have three estimated values for the day's profit: Min-GainA% is the percentage gain that we "think" we might make on QQQQ that day if the "low" value for H occurs (Min-H). Max-GainA% is the percentage gain that we think we might make on QQQQ if the "high" value for H occurs (Max-H). Finally, Avg-GainA% is the most likely (mean) value for the day's profit ... asssuming of course that our symmetrical candlestick pattern occurs. ---- Neural Network GainB ---- GainB% Whereas GainA% is estimated by comparing the Open price to the projected H (HEIGHT) value -- and then assuming a symmetrical candle pattern --, GainB% is calculated directly by a Neural Network that attempts to estimate the percentage gain in QQQQ once the OPEN price is known. predicted H (HEIGHT) value for QQQQ. H is defined as the average of the High and Low price for the day, and is thus the midpoint of the "wick" on the candlestick pattern. As mentioned previously, H can be estimated much more accurately than can any other price parameter. Although the CLOSE price is, of course, the most critical parameter to know, it is extremely likely that a higher estimated value for H will result in a higher value for the CLOSE price. We first compare 5 separate neural networks which attempt to predict the H value for QQQQ. The first three of these (SN1,SN2,SN3) are considered sub- networks because they are based STRICTLY on historical price and volume data for QQQQ. These networks (based on our RaDiSH Number method for generalizing Japanese Candlestick patterns) are less accurate than our two composite networks (CN1,CN2), which also use the MTI (Market Timing Indicator) and the OPEN price for QQQQ at the next market open. Composite neural network #1 (CN1) is our "official" (best) neural network for H and is used in Table II (GainA%). Composite neural network #2 (CN2) is an alternate neural network which has similar error characteristics, but a slightly lower "maximum" error. For each of these 5 neural networks we show the predicted H value for the next market day, plus the Delta value showing the change in this predicted value from the previous day's prediction. Since the inherent errors in these H estimates are rather substantial, an examination of the "changes" in the predicted values are more indicative of what may REALLY happen to H on the next day ... and by extension, the CLOSE price. We also show the "consensus" value for predicted H by averaging the predictions for all 5 neural networks. Although the subnetworks (SN1,SN2,SN3) are less accurate than are the composite neural networks (CN1,CN2), we go ahead and average them in anyway. The Consensus DELTA value is the difference between the current consensus value and the previous consensus value. It can be seen in this Table that a positive value for the Consensus Delta is strongly correlated with an increase in the next day's actual H value ... and also with an increase in our most interesting parameter: the CLOSE Price. Following the 5 sets of H predictions and Deltas, and the Consensus value and its Delta, we show the ACTUAL data for the next day. H is the actual value for H on the Next Day ((high+low)/2), Open is the OPEN price for QQQQ, Close is the CLOSE Price for QQQQ, and Close(DELTA) is the value of the next day's close price minus the current close price. When the H, Open or Close prices are not yet known, then the value $99.99 is used. To use this Table we look at the Consensus Delta, verify that it is a fairly accurate representation of the 5 individual Delta values, and then use the fact that it is positive or negative to see if QQQQ "longs" or "shorts" are likely to be profitable on the following day. We then use this information in conjunction with Tables I (MOS/MCS patterns) and II, and our official signal for QQQQ, in order to decide IF (and how) to enter the market on the following day. *** IMPORTANT NOTE: The Predicted H values for the CN1 and CN2 neural networks as calculated on the last line of this report ASSUME that the next day's Open price for QQQQ will be identical to the previous CLOSE price.
